The insect-inspired world of Cirque du Soleil’s OVO is returning to Windsor audiences this month with a new look.

The high-energy acrobatic show that blends gravity-defying stunts dives into the colourful, buzzing world of nature’s tiniest critters.

Now, after taking the show on the road to 40 counties in the Middle East and Europe, OVO has returned to its Montreal headquarters where a team is currently restaging the show for North American audiences.

“The challenge is to find the balance between preserving the essence of the show that made it a success and allowing it to continue evolving,” said Chantal Tremblay, Cirque du Soleil’s director of creation in a news release.

“Like the insects that bring it to life, the show is in constant transformation, in perpetual motion: that’s the magic of live arts.”

For the past year, the original creators of the show, alongside a creative team of more than 135 people — including 53 artists — have reimagined OVO with a refreshed set design, new acrobatic acts and characters, vibrant costumes, and music.

Audience members can expect to see crickets bouncing on trampolines, and spiders twisting into mesmerizing shapes.

The set of OVO comes to life as a colourful, larger-than-life insect world, with towering leaves, glowing mushrooms, and flowers.

A cast and crew of 100 performers from 25 countries bring the show to life.

The show takes the audience through a day in the life of OVO’s three main characters: a ladybug, a fly and a beetle.

Performers tackle breathtaking feats, from high-flying Chinese poles and aerial silk, to fixed trapeze and contortion acts.

Other critters featured in the show include crickets, butterflies, ants, fireflies, dragonflies, black spiders, mosquitoes, and more.

Originally created in 2009 and premiering in Montreal, OVO has captivated more than seven million audience members around the world.

“Revisiting a production created 15 years ago, with the original creators and the touring team that has made it shine around the world, is an exceptional adventure,” Tremblay added.
