Nuna Baby Essentials has issued a recall on 608,786 of its Rava car seats.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, Nuna’s recall covers its Rava model car seats manufactured between July 16, 2016, and Oct. 25, 2023, which have plastic harness adjuster buttons.

They differ from later car seat models manufactured after Oct. 25, 2023, with fabric covering the harness adjuster area.

Nuna has a complete list of model numbers included in the recall on its website. To find the model number, the company advises to search for a label on the underside of the car seat.

“We take pride that you have chosen our gear to be part of your everyday life with your family, so it’s no surprise that responsibility and dependability are two of Nuna’s core values. We strive to always provide the best, safest gear possible,” said Nuna on its website.

The recall follows an investigation by NHTSA after the government agency and Nuna received complaints about tightening or harness loosening through the harness adjuster mechanism.

It was discovered that the defect was caused by “debris entering the area where the front harness adjuster is located,” per the NHTSA’s report.

“The debris may cause the teeth of the adjuster mechanism to no longer properly clamp onto the adjuster strap, resulting in the harness no longer remaining tight,” the report adds.

While there are no injuries or fatalities reported in connection with the issue, Nuna has vowed to offer owners of Rava car seat models manufactured between July 16, 2016, and Oct. 25, 2023, and included in its list, a new seat pad, cleaning kit, and care instructions to ensure the car seat’s harness adjuster is kept clean and working correctly.

To register for a free remedy kit, parents can sign up on Nuna’s website or reach out to [email protected] or at 1-855-686-2891.

Nuna notes, however, that if parents have a recalled car seat that is functioning properly and securing their child according to the existing instruction manual and labels, “you may continue to use your car seat as directed.”

To check for functionality, the company advises parents to perform a harness function test. This test consists of pushing on the back of the seat while pulling forward firmly on the harness straps without pressing the release button. A video demonstration is available on Nuna’s website.
